Quit Trying to Be Perfect

by Marc Bitanga on June 8, 2010

For every blog post I publish there are 5 others that never see the light of day. There are probably an additional handful that stay as a thought and never get penned.

Perfection kills. It kills ideas & progress

In the online space perfection can stifle forward momentum and wins.

Perfection comes from the solid state mentality of finality. The “I’ve got one chance to get it right” mentality. Many times we plan for the worst case scenario…the scenario that never happens.

Don’t get me wrong, in many cases we do only have one chance to get it right. The trick is to pick your spots when you should be obsessive compulsive and when good enough gets you one step further.

I think this blog post is perfect :)

Seriously though, sometimes, I don’t post on our blog because I just have time to write a quick blog post that could be so much better if I spent more time on it.
This post is a very good reminder.

Definitely doesn’t apply to everything out there, but applies more often than not online.

Thanks for stopping by Julien :)

and, in the end, it is impossible to be perfect and if you get to it it is going to be deadly boring :)

I hear ya. I gave up on perfection when I started having to deal with blog- and article-deadlines. I used to polish and fine-tune everything I wrote, then sleep a night on it before looking at it with fresh eyes and doing another round of polishing and fine-tuning. And yes, that did result in a better final product.

But I just don’t have the time any more. Most of my blog posts and articles now have only one definitive standard: “That’ll do.” :)
